Carol Rozek has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Montclair State College, an MBA in pharmaceutical studies from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a law degree from Pace University School of Law. She practiced patent law for 15 years for biotech firms in New York and New Jersey. During this time, while training her own dogs, Carol became keenly interested in canine behavior and began her journey toward becoming a trainer and behavior counselor. While working full time as a patent attorney, Carol started Opportunity Barks LLC and worked part time as a dog trainer giving private lessons in clients’ homes. In 2007 Carol decided to leave her corporate career and follow her passion for dogs full time.

Carol’s training and certifications include:

Assistant Trainer at St. Hubert’s Dog Training School in Madison, NJ.
Certificate in Training and Counseling from the San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers.
Dog Walking Certification and Dog First Aid Certification from dogTEC.
Dog and Cat First Aid Certification from the American Red Cross.

Carol has also trained and competed with her own dogs in rally and competitive obedience.

Sonya Mandel has a bachelor’s degree in sociology, women’s studies and anthropology and a master’s degree in special education from the College of Staten Island in New York. After 20 years as a special education teacher in New York City and six years of volunteering as a dog walker for Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge Inc., Sonya started her own pet sitting business, which she successfully ran for four years before moving to Oregon. Sonya is certified in Dog and Cat First Aid.

In 2008, Carol and Sonya merged their talents and opened Opportunity Barks Dog Training, Daycare and Boarding in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. Both Carol and Sonya trained under Mare Shey at Dancin’ Woofs Compassionate Dog Training & Daycare in Bend, Oregon. This training explored all aspects of owning and operating a dog daycare business, including understanding canine behavior and pack dynamics. Carol and Sonya are now studying to become certified Pet Care Technicians.
