Training Made Simple

Let's keep dog training as simple and gentle as possible.

I'm incredulous. The same people who want to ban pit bulls, and protest sale of meat by wearing lettuce bikinis are providing plenty of meat on their own. I wonder what people who donate money to PETA or entrust pets the turn in to PETA think about this? PETA doesn't like criticism.

Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008.  [...]

According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

This is pretty reasonable list of things for adults to know! California Science Standards grade 9-12.

(Available free online from CA Dept of Education)

Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content of the other four strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations.

The mysteries of science are explored using the common Easter Peep. This is actually quite a good writeup of scientific method.

"Basic Science: Our first studies focused on basic attributes and reactions of Peeps to simple conditions and stimuli.

JUNO

From here

"Juno was the Queen of the Gods and Jupiter's wife. The Goddess of heaven andf the moon, Juno symbolized the matronly qualities desired in Roman women. She was the protector of woman during childbirth, rearing, and their preparation for marriage. It was believed she was present and during weddings.

Juno protected the City of Rome when the Gauls attacked. Before the attack the  geese in the temple of Juno alerted the Romans, giving them a chance to  defeat the Gauls.

This is a subject dear to my heart:

"When all you want is the facts, navigating the newspaper might be a tricky ordeal. Sometimes bias is the result of laziness, and sometimes it's a deliberate attempt to push a particular point of view. Either way, you should always be on the lookout for bias.

I liked this rule:

I certainly feel MY brain is on the edge of chaos. Research shows this might be true for all of us.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2009) — Cambridge-based researchers provide new evidence that the human brain lives "on the edge of chaos", at a critical transition point between randomness and order. The study provides experimental data on an idea previously fraught with theoretical speculation.

Self-organized criticality (where systems spontaneously organize themselves to operate at a critical point between order and randomness), can emerge from complex interactions in many different physical systems, including avalanches, forest fires, earthquakes, and heartbeat rhythm

Legality of program challenged as state personnel in helicopters aim to kill hundreds of wolves despite objections from the National Park Service

WASHINGTON − The Palin administration considerably escalated its aerial wolf killing spree this past weekend, with full details only becoming clear in the hours after thePlan with gun killing initiated. At least 58 wolves have been killed in the Upper Yukon/Tanana area of Alaska over the past 4 days by Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) staff, which indicates that their target of approximately 250 wolves will be easily met.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 17, 2009) — Adults of many animal species play a crucial role in the social development of youngsters. A new study reveals that the ratio of adults to young plays a much more important role in social development than the mere presence of adults.

Marie Bourjade, Alice de Boyer des Roches and Martine Hausberger of the University of Rennes 1, France, studied the effects of the adult-young ratios in naturally-formed groups of Przewalski horses on aggression rates and social cohesion of young horses. Previous studies led by the laboratory have shown that this ratio plays an essential role in song acquisition in songbirds (which has parallels with human language development) and so the authors sought to find a more general principle regarding the effects of adult-young ratios on social behaviour.
